Brian Sloboda – Candidate for Vice President

I am pretty excited to be nominated as a vice president for the Society of Government Economists for the 2007-2008 term, since there were many exciting events this past year in SGE: SGE events at the ASSA Annual Meeting, the evening seminar series, and other SGE activities. During my two terms as Treasurer, I continued to discover that SGE is a strong grassroots organization which provides excellent opportunities for professional development for federal and nonfederal economists. Also during my two terms as treasurer,  I streamlined the financial and record-keeping procedures for SGE.  Currently, I am an economist with Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS)  in the U.S. Department of Transportation and also was an economist at the Bureau of Economic Analysis in the U.S. Department of Commerce. Utilizing my experiences from serving as committee member for the Federal Forecasters Consortium and being on the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Economics Association (PEA), I can facilitate and further promote the efforts of SGE members and demonstrate the important role of government economists in making policy.  Also I would like to work with the SGE Board to continue the efforts of increasing membership and to promote SGE throughout the economics community.

Michael Wolf – Treasurer Candidate

I have worked as an economist in the Office of Employment Projections at the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the past three years, and during my time in DC I have felt that the SGE luncheons and conferences have provided excellent forums for professional development and unique opportunities for government and public policy economists in different fields to share their expertise and learn from others.  I would be honored to serve on the board of SGE and to help continue to make these events successful and rewarding experiences for all involved.

Seth Gertz – Board Member Candidate

I have enjoyed serving on SGE's Board the past two years and would like
to continue serving on the Board this coming year. Over the past two
years, I have served as executive secretary of SGE (2005-06) and book
review editor (2006-07) for SGE's Monthly Bulletin. In addition to
Board duties, I served on the program committee for SGE's 2006 biennial
conference. I am interested in continuing my involvement with the
organization, which began when I served as a rapporteur for several
monthly luncheons in 2001 and 2002. For the past six years, I have
worked as an economist with the Congressional Budget Office's tax
division.

Kevin Moore – Board Member Candidate

I have enjoyed serving on the SGE Board for the past year and would like to continue my service for another term.  As membership director I have been coordinating the Board’s effort to modernize the membership database.  This project is ongoing, and I would like to see the project through to completion.  The new database will allow us to automate many of the membership functions, such as sending emails about expiring memberships.  For the past four years, I have worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Board on the Survey of Consumer Finances.  My areas of research interest include labor economics, public finance, entrepreneurship, and income and wealth inequality.

Steven Payson – Candidate for Board Member

I am truly honored to be considered for a seat on the SGE Board of Directors.  I have belonged to SGE for several years; I organized an SGE session back in 2001 at the AEA meetings, and I presented a paper at an SGE/AEA session in 2006.  I have been a government economist for over 15 years, first at the Department of Agriculture, then National Science Foundation, and most recently the Bureau of Economic Analysis. At BEA I manage the “Special Studies Branch” which produces a variety of economic statistics on the government sector of the economy.  Before entering the government, I was an economic consultant for four years at ICF Incorporated, and a research associate at the Inter-American Development Bank for another four years.  I received my doctorate in economics from Columbia University in 1991.  On the side, I have been teaching a night class on the “Economics of Technology, Innovation, and Growth” at Georgetown.

In my studies and writing I have explored interdisciplinary topics between economics and science policy, and I have also studied the topic of integrity and responsible leadership in economics.  As an SGE Board Member, I would help government economists receive greater recognition and respect for the work they do.  I believe strongly that our work benefits society substantially, and I think this should be better realized both within and outside the economics profession.
