An Economic View of the Pandemic Influenza
Jenny Randall, Department of Homeland Security
Summary
For the past two years, since the outbreak of A/H5N1, the United States as well as every country in the world has been working to prepare for a potential influenza pandemic. Currently, there are several notable studies that outline the potential macroeconomic impacts of a pandemic should it occur. These studies discuss the economic impact in the number of deaths, hospitalization/medical needs and the resultant impacts to the US and international gross domestic products. Little is written however, about the microeconomic impacts of a pandemic other than investors’ guides, several overarching ‘how to prepare’ guides for businesses, and some sector-specific guidance. This session discusses existing studies and guidances, their limitations and makes recommendations for future research efforts to minimize both the micro- and macroeconomic effects of a pandemic.
