U.S. Immigration: Demographics and the Workplace

Rakesh Kochar

Associate Director for Research, Pew Hispanic Center

Summary

This talk will focus on the characteristics of foreign-born workers in the U.S. labor force and their employment and earnings outcomes. Nearly one out of every two new workers in the U.S. is foreign-born and many are here without authorization.  The discussion will highlight interrelated aspects of the foreign-born experience in the U.S. labor market—employment, earnings, asset ownership and wealth accumulation, education, industry and occupation—and will conclude with a review of the evidence on the impact of immigration on the employment and earnings outcomes of native-born workers.
