President’s Message
August has come and gone and fall is rapidly approaching. Fall brings our biennial SGE conference. This year we have an exciting program. The theme is Public Policy and U.S. Competitiveness: Labor, Capital and Trade. We are very fortunate to have Matthew Slaughter from the Council of Economic Advisors as the keynote speaker. During lunch we can listen to Martin Bailey from the Institute for International Economics presenting “Can America still compete?” For a complete program and registration information please view our conference page on the SGE website.
Don’t forget to come and hear Ron Blackwell from the AFL-CIO September 21, 2006 at the China town garden. Organized labor is facing many challenges and potentially diminishing clout after the recent split. Come here what their Chief economist has to say. Contact Jon Schwabish to make a reservation. Don’t forget to check out other upcoming events as well.
Also available is Bob Shackleton’s review of Fortune’s Formula: The Untold Story of the Scientific Betting System That Beat the Casinos and Wall Street, by William Poundstone.
If you missed Roger Betancourt in July, be sure to look at the rapporteur’s report prepared by John Sabelhaus.
If you are interested in aging issues and its implications on federal forecasting, the Free Federal Forecasters Conferenceis coming September 28, 2006. If you would like to attend, please email Terry Manzi by September 7; your name, affiliation, and contact information and she will register you for the conference.
I would also like to thank everyone for your patience as we are going through our web site changes. The archives will be fully linked again soon.
Have a great September, and I hope to see you soon at an SGE event.
Bill Lawhorn
President SGE
